‘Incredible’ teacher killed in ski crash during Perisher school excursion remembered

A sport teacher who was killed in a car crash in Kosciuszko National Park has been remembered for his “immeasurable” impact on a school community.

Jonas Stoebe, 55, had taken a group of Year 9 and Year 11 students from Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School to Perisher Ski Resort when he was involved in a ski accident on a mountain at 3.40pm on Wednesday, September 6.

He sustained a brain injury and died on Tuesday, September 12, NSW Police said.

Stoebe leaves behind two young sons, aged 12 and nine years old.

A GoFundMe fundraiser organised by his friends and colleagues to support his family with the cost of his funeral and other household expenses has so far raised almost $250,000.

“Jonas was one of the most hardworking, dedicated, humorous and kind teachers I’ve ever had the privilege of teaching alongside. I am in total awe at the deep impact he has made in the community, and how much he will be missed,” colleague Emma Watts commented on the page.

“Jonas was an incredible teacher and friend. I will always cherish the memories of the year 10 trip to Europe, the German classes and the fun parties and adventures,” a student of Stoebe’s commented.

The 55-year-old was a teacher at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School in Middle Cove, Sydney, for 10 years.

The school posted a tribute to Stoebe on its Facebook page and called him “a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to all who knew him”.

“The impact Jonas had on our school and the lives of our students is immeasurable, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts,” the post said.

NSW Police said it was continuing to investigate the accident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
