The Powerhouse Museum, in Sydney’s Ultimo, is set to shut its doors for three years to make way for a massive redevelopment project.

The museum has been a popular site for Sydneysiders and visitors to experience arts, design, science and technology since it first opened in 1988.

However, after a decade of delays in the project, the museum announced it will be closing to the public after this year’s summer holidays on February 5.

While the original budget has been halved, the makeover is expected to reveal more of the building’s historic features and more display space.

Minister for Arts John Graham said the project was “the next step in the process of reimagining the future” for the museum.

“After nine years of divided opinions of this site, we are hopeful these new designs and a renewed focus on applied arts and sciences are more in line with the community’s expectations of this much-loved institution,” he said.

“The area around the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo has changed significantly in the last 30 years. The design plans will reorient the Museum, and open onto to the Goods Line. This will connect the Museum to the city, including major public transport options.”

The government has committed a huge $250 million for the heritage revitalisation, Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havilah said.

“The Powerhouse Museum Ultimo has adopted a $50 million philanthropy target,” she said.

“We have already secured $10 million towards this through a partnership with UTS.”

Powerhouse Trust President Peter Collins told 7NEWS “the people of Sydney love the site”.

“I’m confident when doors re-open that the community will flood back in, and they’ll love what they see,” he said.
