A toddler’s parents are demanding answers after a routine medical scan at a hospital in Sydney’s west allegedly left her with second-degree burns.

The parents claim a routine MRI at Campbelltown Hospital in December left toddler Harper Peel with a serious burn to her leg.

“She’s been in a lot of stress, a lot of pain.” Harper’s mother Felicity told 7NEWS.

“She was quite hysterical when she woke up, that’s when I noticed these two black dots on her leg.

“The doctors said to us, it looks like an old wound, it looks like an old scab.”

The Peels pressured the hospital for answers, prompting an internal investigation that remains ongoing.

However, the couple were allegedly told, both in person and over the phone, not to expect any answers.

“I was going into shock, I was dumbfounded. I didn’t think health professionals would do this,” Harper’s father Ben said.

Harper’s parents took her for a second opinion at Westmead Children’s Hospital, where Harper’s injury was immediately diagnosed as a deep dermal burn, also known as a second-degree burn.

“The triage nurse said straight away, ‘that looks like a definite contact burn’,” Peel said.

“Whereas at Campbelltown, the burns specialist couldn’t even tell us if it was a burn or not.”

Injuries from MRIs, such as burns, are rare but have been documented in medical articles worldwide, with organisations such as the FDA highlighting the need for improved safety standards.

In a statement to 7NEWS, the South Western Sydney Local Health District apologised to Harper and her family for any distress caused.

“We take patient safety seriously and are thoroughly investigating,” it said.

“The main thing that we want is an explanation as to what happened and what measures they’re putting in place to make sure this doesn’t happen to another child,” Felicity said.
