Two men have been injured in what is believed to have been a targeted shooting on a busy street in Sydney’s inner west.

About 1.50pm on Friday, emergency services raced to a business on Marrickville Rd, Marrickville, after reports shots had been fired.

7NEWS understands the shooting took place at a barber shop along the busy street.

Two men aged 20 and 33 were found suffering gunshot wounds.

One of the men was shot in the chest, while the other was shot in the buttocks.

Both men were treated by paramedics before they were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

One man is in a critical condition while the other is in a stable condition.

Police say they are searching for two men who they believe are responsible for the shooting and are still on the run.

“It is very brazen and that’s why we believe it’s obviously a targeted attack,” Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald told reporters on Friday.

She said both victims were known to authorities.

Police are also looking into whether two vehicle fires on Friday afternoon at Marrickville and Dulwich Hill are linked to the shooting.

“I was just driving home and heard this explosion and just saw all this smoke,” one local who saw the vehicle fire told 7NEWS.

Another local added: “They had the area all taped off and secured … I also saw there was a shooting in Marrickville and I didn’t realise that the two may or may not have been connected.”

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting has commenced.

Police urge anyone who sees a white Toyota Camry with registration DMM 59H to call Crime Stoppers.

It comes just a week after a man was shot dead in Bondi Junction, sparking a major police operation.

Police raced to Spring St last Tuesday following reports shots had been fired.

The man was shot dead while he was sitting in a stationary vehicle in a carpark.

7NEWS understands the man was 48-year-old Alen Moradian.

Police said they believed the shooting was the latest in a spate of gangland killings in Sydney and that the victim was known to police as a “major player” in organised crime.
