A young couple has been threatened with knives during a terrifying home invasion in Sydney’s southwest, with the culprits still on the run.

Jewellery was swiped by the intruders after they stormed the Austral property about 10pm on Sunday.

A 29-year-old man and 28-year-old woman were at home at the time but were unharmed in the ordeal.

“You’ve got a couple sleeping at home, minding their own business, living their life and then bang, something like that happens,” neighbour Joshua Antwi said.

“That’s just a bit un-Australian actually.”

The men were pictured on CCTV making away with the stolen loot.

The dog squad carried out sweeps on the ground while the police helicopter searched from the sky, with little luck.

Locals said it was a change in atmosphere for a street that is “usually pretty quiet” and where everyone is “real friendly”.

Other neighbours said they heard police cars race to the home and footsteps pounding the pavement late on Sunday.

Detectives are unsure who the intruders are and why they targeted this specific house.

“(They’re a) lovely couple, you know. Didn’t really expect anything like this,” Antwi said.
